Public Notice (9-18-18): Overflow of Untreated Wastewater

General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county (ies):

The Town of Benson had a discharge of untreated wastewater from September 13 until September 18, 2018 of an estimated 300,000 gallons from one manhole on Martin Street and another at the intersection of Martin Street and Wall Street. Runoff also occurred at service connections on Marin and Wall Streets.

This overflow was due to rainwater infiltration into Benson’s wastewater system during Hurricane Florence. The untreated wastewater was discharged into Driving Branch in the Neuse River Basin.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on September 14, 2018 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact Paul Allen, Chief Plant Operator, at (919) 894-3553.
