Public Notice (9-20-18): Overflow of Untreated Wastewater

Notification of Overflow of Untreated Wastewater

General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county (ies):

The Town of Benson had a discharge of untreated wastewater from September 13 until September 20, 2018 of an estimated 40,000 gallons from the service connection at 207 West Martin Street.

This overflow was reported to the public on September 18, 2018 via press release. This is the official notification that the overflow has now stopped at this location.

This overflow was due to rainwater infiltration into Benson’s wastewater system during Hurricane Florence. The untreated wastewater was discharged into Driving Branch in the Neuse River Basin.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on September 14, 2018 and is reviewing the matter. For more information contact Paul Allen, Chief Plant Operator, at (919) 894-3553.
