Residential Garbage Collection Policies
Curbside pickup at a cost of $9.50 per month and Waste Industries will furnish my residents with a cart.
Everyone in my household are seventy (70) years old or over and are entitled to backyard pickup at the price of $9.50per month and Waste Industries, will furnish my residents with a cart.

Backyard pickup at a cost of $15.50 per month and Waste Industries, will furnish my residents with a cart because resident does not meet the above requirements.
One extra cart an additional cost of $9.50 per month and total of $19.00 per month and Waste Industries, will furnish my residents with a cart.
Residential containers
It’s the responsibility of the occupant to provide
adequate number of proper containers for residential garbage
collection.
Residential containers shall be portable receptacles of
standard galvanized metal, plastic or fiberglass with watertight
construction with tight fitting covers and handles.
The Size of the receptacles shall not be less than 10 gallons
or more than 33 gallons capacity.
It is not necessary to put garbage in a plastic bag, but
we encourage you to do this, both to help the collectors and
ease your job of keeping the container clean. When garbage
is in a plastic bag, please remember to put it inside the
container to dogs or other animals won’t rip the bad
and scatter the garbage in your yard. LOOSE GARBAGE OUTSIDE
OF CONTAINER WILL NOT BE PICKED-UP.
If you have a container which you do not want emptied, please
mark it clearly.
Under no circumstances will the town pick-up no more than
3 containers from any residences at any one stop. Residents
may request special pickups other than regular route times
which shall be picked-up at the convenience of the Public
Works Department and a charge of $50.00 shall be charged to
the resident per partial or full flatbed truckload.
Where to put containers
Please put containers at the rear or side of your house
or next to the street where the collector can easily get to
and empty the containers. If you put the container inside
a small fence, please make sure it has a door or gate on the
side so the collector can safely remove the container horizontally.
Garbage will be picked up at only one (1) location at each
residence. If you have a dog, please put the garbage container
where the dog will not attack or threaten the collector.
Yard Waste
No limbs will be picked-up unless they have been cut into
lengths of 4 feet or less and shall be no larger than 4 inches
in diameter (Distance through the limb). Limbs from 4 inches
to 10 inches in diameter will be accepted if in lengths of
2 feet or less. Limbs shall be neatly stacked behind the curb
(not in the gutter or roadside ditch) with all sawed off ends
of the limb to be placed facing the same direction.
All leaves, grass clippings, pine straw, pine cones, shrub
clippings, etc. shall be placed at the curb for collection
weekly (if possible). LEAVES, PINE STRAW AND GRASS CLIPPINGS
THAT ARE BAGGED WILL NOT BE PICKED-UP. DO NOT MIX YARD WASTE
WITH HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE.
During the period of November 1st to February 1st the Town
of Benson will be operating its left suction equipment. Leaves
should be piled behind the curb (not in the gutter or roadside
ditch) and should be free of sticks, rocks, and other debris.
Debris such as sticks, rocks, etc. are damaging to the town’s
suction equipment. No leaves or trash shall be burned on street
gutters or roadside ditches.
The town will not collect trees, limbs and general debris
left from the land clearing operation.
The town will not collect cuttings left by hired tree surgeon
or any person hired to cut or trim trees.
Construction Material
The town will not collect any type of construction materials.
Construction material consist of: any type lumber, sheet rock,
shingles, bricks, blocks, mortar, sand, steel, tin, iron,
aluminum siding, vinyl siding, wire, pipes, gutters, doors,
or windows. In case of large construction jobs the owner may
rent dumpster, from commercial contractors, for a nominal
fee that will be delivered to the site.
Recycling
The Town of Benson now offers voluntary recycling bins at the drop off site located at 208 N. Elm Street between the Town of Benson Police Department and our Electrical Department (formerly the Town of Benson Fire Department). The following items are allowed for recycling: plastic, newspaper, aluminum and cardboard items. PLEASE DO NOT PUT HOUSEHOLD WASTE IN THIS RECYCLING RECEPTACLE.
Other Collection
The town will collect appliances such as stoves, water heaters,
refrigerators, etc. only on Wednesdays of each week. Any citizens
desiring to have an appliance picked up must call the Public
Work Department or
Town Hall at least 24 hours prior to the desired collections
time. The town will not collect any appliance until all doors
have been removed as required by NC General Statute.
The Town will not collect any hazardous material such as:
batteries, oil, paint, paint thinner, gas or chemicals.
The Town will not collect recyclable corrugated cardboard.
The Town will not pick up any tires except during the clean
up weeks designated twice a year.
The Town will maintain a manned collection site of 500 North
Market Street on Wednesday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and on Saturday
from 8:00am to 1:00pm for citizens to dispose of household
furniture such as: tables, couches, dressers, chairs, beds,
mattress, springs, lamps, and rugs.
Citizens that are cleaning our rental property, storage building,
barns, attics must bring all above items to collection site
on these days or may request a special pick-up as outlined
in number 6 under Residential Containers of this brochure.
A valid Town of Benson sticker must be displayed on the windshield
of vehicle to use the manned collection site.
Material from outside of City Limits will not be accepted.
