North Carolina pioneered customized job training for new and expanding businesses. Today, this state-sponsored program is considered the best of its kind, and is administered through the state's Community College System.
Johnston Community College in neighboring Smithfield offers associate degree programs and specialized training for industries. In most cases training is free to qualifying businesses.

North Carolina is home to several top ranking higher education institutions. Some of these institutions with advanced resources are less than an hour commute, with Campbell University located just 12 miles west of Benson.
